Elina Salmela

Photograph of Elina SalmelaI am an Associate Professor in Archaeogenomics at University of Turku (both in the Department of Biology and Department of Archaeology), and a guest researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.

My research focuses on the genetic population history of Finland and nearby regions. Working as part of the Human Diversity research consortium of University of Turku, my group analyzes DNA sequence data of modern and ancient individuals to produce insight into population history events such as migrations, population contacts and admixtures. Furthermore, we study individuals’ ancestry, relatedness and genetic traits as well as the genomic effects of natural selection.

Through multidisciplinary collaborations, our results can be combined with those from other fields – such as archaeology, historical linguistics, and various paleosciences – to illuminate diverse aspects of the past, ranging from the role of individual humans as members of their social communities to the role of the human species as part of the northern ecosystem.

For more detailed info on my interests and merits, please see my CV and list of publications.

Contact email. I’m also on Orcid, Google Scholar, Github, and (increasingly seldom) on Twitter.
